Thats why Blitzcrank is also a good support, even if he doesn´t offer a shild or heals.
Supports usually build two gold per 10 items.(philosopher stone, heart of gold for example)
This items generate a small amount of gold, because supports usually won´t kills creeps.
A good support won´t build dmg items because the amount of dmg he will get with this items is not good enough compared to items which offers your team better stats and make your team usefull-
The support trys to get the most positive,effective and possible most influnced items with his possible small amount of gold.
This items have auras to make their own team stronger. (For example aegis of the legion or Zekes herold)
Beside that supports buying wards for the botlane to get vision over the dragon and possible ganks.
Later in game he wards alot more than his teammates do and offer mapvision and controll for his team.

The most supports have teamfight changing ulitmates, such as Sonas,Nunu&Willumps,Jannas,Blitzcranks,Sorakas,Lulus and Tarics for example.
The support and ad carry are on bottom lane because the dragon is on bottom.
The amount of 2 people have a higher chance of protecting the dragon than 1 would do.
Also the midlaner can go to the dragon and protect it in the early stage of play.
The midlaner are usually mages, caster types of champions.
They deal magic dmg and deal the most dmg with their spells instead of their autoattacks.
Spells get a significant dmg increase by level up them.
Since you are on a solo lane you level up faster than on a duo lane and your spells deal more dmg.
Beside that the most important point is that the midlane is a very short lane, the shortest of all.
It is the safest lane of all.
The most mage types have no escape abilitys(jumps, flash)
They can simply avoid to die by going back to tower.
They allways can flee by flashing to tower.

This helps them to escape since a 1-2secounds stun is enough to run to the tower and be safe.

A good midlaner will allways ward both sides of the river, mostly he will ward both sides of wraiths (the ghosts in the jungle)
Will gank the sidelanes and help with the dragon.
He will try to burst the enemys dmg dealer(mages and ad carrys)
The toplaner is usually a champion that is very tanky.
He takes the toplane because he needs a big amount of gold for tanky items and dmg items.
He is solo because he can survive longer periods of dmg trades and have himself often jump abilitys and stuns.
He have unlike the mid a very difficult lane.
The lane is longer and offers alot of space to gank.
He will survive this lane because he can mostly stun and jump away, this offers enough time to get to your tower.
Also they often have sort of health regenerations spells or lifeleech items.
A good toplaner will counterbuild the enemy toplaner,meanwhile he using every possible advantage to outfarm him, ward the topriver and possible take controll over the enemy jungle in the toppart of the map.
He is the guy who will focus the dmg dealer in teamfights and/or protect his own dmg dealer.
The jungler is most of the time a semi tank semi dmg semi support champion.
He is in the jungle to offer all lanes the most possible gold income and taking himself the gold of the jungle.
He allways use smite.
He usually have something that regenerate his life, lifeleech items or spells.
He ganks all lanes if he have the opportunity to do so.
Sometimes he hold lanes.
He give the buffs to other champions. (Mostly he will dmg the golem and give the midlaner the blue buff)
He use smite to make sure he kills the dragon and make his jungling safer and faster.
A good jungler wards the map, mostly parts of the enemy jungle and the river.
Also he buys the oracle to kill enemy wards, he does it since he is the type of champions who is running through all parts of the map.

If you want to win at League of Legends, then you need to understand your role in the game. Surprisingly, many players don’t know what to do when they play a particular role. From stealing kills as support to not ganking as jungler, knowing what not to do is also equally as important.

To set things straight, we thought we’d have a look at every role in League of Legends and explain what you’re meant to be doing. Not only is this perfect for beginners learning the game, but it’s also useful for those “experienced players”.

What Are The League of Legends Roles

There are currently 5 roles in League of Legends, each with their own responsibilities. Each role makes up an important part of the team. If 1 person doesn’t fully understand what to do, then they can jeopardize losing the match.

To make sure you understand what you’re supposed to be doing in your chosen role, we’ve explained it as simple as possible for you.

Marksman / ADC

One of the most popular League of Legends roles in game is the marksman. Also known as the ADC (attack damage carry), the marksman is responsible for dishing out serious damage. Who doesn’t want to impress their friends with a penta-kill?

The primary role of the marksman is to kill the other team’s marksman, as well as their entire team. In order to do this, the marksman will need very high damage output including a high crit chance. The downside of the marksman is that they are often very squishy since they only build offensive items. This means if they get caught by the bruiser or jungler they will often die. In order to survive in lane and acquire enough gold to become powerful enough, they require support from another player on their team.

This is where the support comes in.

Support

The support on your team will primarily be in the same lane as your marksman / ADC. Their role in the lane will be to help protect, sustain and support the ADC. This means sacrificing their life, hitpoints and gold to ensure the ADC stays alive as long as possible, and gets the most kills.

Most support champions will be fully equipped with crowd control effects such as stuns, slows, snares, silences and knock ups. All of these are to be used against the enemy to ensure your ADC can secure a kill.

Another important part of the support role is providing vision for your team. Everyone hates spending money on wards, but you need them if you want to win.

Jungler

Since there are only 3 lanes on summoner’s rift and 5 players, there has to be a player who plays in the jungle. This is done for a number of reasons. The first is that by having someone in the jungle utilizing the jungle camps, they can gain XP without having to share it with other players.

If 2 players decided to go top lane but the enemy team only had 1 player there, after a while there would be a significant level difference. This is because XP is split between champions in the area. So by having a player in the jungle not only allows other players to get the full XP from their lanes, but the jungler also gets maximum XP.

The second reason for having a jungler is to help support other lanes. Naturally, the jungler will have to move from camp to camp in order to kill creatures and get XP. This requires a lot of roaming and running around. A lot of the time the jungler will pass a lane in order to get to another jungle camp. While passing, the jungler can assist the lane with pushing minions or trying to gank the enemy laner.

Because of this, most junglers are highly mobile, have huge gap closers and can deal tons of damage.

Tank / Bruiser

When it comes to League of Legends roles, the tank is often the most underestimated. Most people think of tanks as slow champion that doesn’t do any damage. That might be true, but they are an important member of the team. Not only do they soak up damage from other champions but they also help crowd control and stun the enemies ADC.

The tank will likely be the only person on the team that will have the defenses and crowd control to get to the ADC without dying. Once they make it to the ADC it’s their job to stun, snare and disrupt them as much as possible so they can’t deal damage. Your teams ADC and APC will then move in to secure the kill.

Mid Laner / APC

Similar to the ADC (attack damage carry) on your team, the APC (ability power carry) is capable of dealing a lot of damage. However, unlike the ADC the APC doesn’t require support from other champions. Instead, they play on their own in order to get the maximum XP as fast as possible.

Also unlike ADCs, APC do most of their damage with their abilities instead of auto attacks. This gives APC’s something called “burst damage” the ability to do a lot of damage in a short space of time.

Mid laners play an important role throughout the stages of the game. As the name suggests, mid laner means they play in the mid lane. We’ll get more into which lane each roles plays, but for now, it’s important to know the APC is usually found in the mid lane. Not only does this allow the player to get maximum XP on their own, but it also gives them great “roamability”.

This means if the top or bottom lane need help, the mid lane is available to help if the jungler has died or is preoccupied. Having another player on your team that can roam to different lanes can substantially increase your gank potential.

The Current Lane Meta

The current lane meta in League of Legends is as follows:

    • Tank / Bruiser

  • Bottom Lane
    • Support & ADC
  • Jungle
    • Jungler

If you’ve played any game in League of Legends, then you should know that already. But why is it like that? Why not the support and ADC in the top lane? What gives?

There are numerous reasons why champions play in certain lanes and not others. Most of these boil down to experience and location.

The ADC and support always play in the bottom lane because it’s the closest lane to the dragon. If they played in the top lane then they’d have to run all the way down the river which would take too long. Instead by playing in the bottom lane, they can easily sneak in a dragon if the other team backs to base.

Top and mid lane could in theory swap lanes and be fine. However, most champions in the mid lane are more mobile and do a lot more damage. Sometimes you need some extra fire power in the bottom lane when there is a group fight. Who you gonna call? The APC of course!

It is also possible for the top and mid lane to play with teleport in order to boost their mobility. By doing this they can zap all over the map whenever needed.

So why doesn’t the jungler group up with the mid or top lane to stomp the enemy? Well, in theory, it sounds great, but if the other opponent plays defensive, you’ll never get to hit them. Then in the long run, they will slowly out level you and eventually be able to kill you both. Not so much a good idea after all.

Now that you know all the League of Legends roles, you have no excuse not to suck in game. If you know someone that has no idea how to jungle or what they’re meant to be doing as support, then let them know. It could be the difference between destroying your opponents or getting rekt.
